Fly Fish Laguna Madre: Arroyo City, Port Mansfield and South Padre Island
When people come to Arroyo City, TX for the first time, they inevitably ask where the “City” came from in the name. Cosmopolitan it is not. We are located halfway between Port Mansfield and Port Isabel, on the brackish Arroyo Colorado. The Arroyo holds fishable populations of flounder, tarpon and snook, and of course gobs of trout to fish for under the lights at night. A short boat ride puts us in the middle of the Lower Laguna Madre, with the best shallow water sight fishing for redfish and trout on the planet. We fly fish the waters of the Lower Laguna Madre, ranging from Port Mansfield and the Land Cut to the north and South Padre Island and Brazos Santiago Pass to the south. For most fly fishing trips we launch directly from Arroyo City, although we always have the option of launching from Port Mansfield, Port Isabel or South Padre Island.
Our little lodge has everything we need down here: a tv for weather and football, a dedicated fly tying and shotgun shell reloading loft, lights for trout at night, a screened porch where we eat, and plenty of room for four guests. Our waterfront dock and palapa are perfect for relaxing after a day on the water in South Texas.
All our fishing guides are members of the Hell’s Bay Pro Staff and all are full-time guides. The Hells Bay skiffs are ideally suited to the environment. They pole well, jump up in less than a foot of water, and have terrific range.
So come on down to South Texas and experience the finest shallow water sight fishing for redfish and trout on the planet. At the right time of year, we can shoot some birds or catch tarpon and snook as well. It is unspoiled and uncrowded, with gin clear water, the largest grass flats on the Gulf Coast and the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the United States. Welcome!
